Bumps in the Road

Lily has had a low fever since the surgery that they've been keeping an eye on.  It's normal to get low grade fevers after surgery cause your body can be in shock.  But this, paired with the fact that one of her stents wasn't draining, posed a threat.  After they rolled an ultrasound machine in to take a look, the stent draining her left Kidney had a kink. A stent is a skinny tube, so imagine a kink in a hose.  Urine was pooling in her kidney causing it to swell and possibly get infected.  This is likely the reason she was having some chest pains earlier today too.  And this is the reason she's been having fevers.  They decided that they would need to put her under and take a closer look.  It was probable that they would need to drain it by taking a small tube and inserting it into her side (through skin) and get it to empty that way.  We were NOT happy about this.  But what choice did we have.  So there we were walking her down to the OR again.  But the the whole team was there, including Dr Dicarlo, the newest Urologist on staff, and she's like my age.  I like her a lot, and she has wonderful bedside manner.   They let us know it would be quick, about an hour, and this would help a lot.

They came and got us a little over an hour later with good news.  Turns out they didn't have to place a drain in her side.  After she was asleep, they were able to move and manipulate the kink out, and urine started flowing immediately!  This was great news, and would most definitely solve those problems!  Funny part was that the resident also said very casually "Oh and she lost in tooth from the breathing tube" like it was no big deal.  I was so sad!  I get sad when my kids lose their front teeth cause it makes them look older, and I love their little baby smiles. The doctors felt so bad, they pulled together a few bucks for the tooth fairy.  LOL!

However, we are not totally in the clear.  She's also been having some repository problems.  Her lungs are flat, meaning they are not filling with air like normally.  She's been sleeping a lot and taking short little breaths, not big deep ones.  So now our goal is to get her to breathe deeper.  We have to get her to blow into this tube every two hours.  And they gave us bubbles for her to blow too.  But another way she can breathe deeper is when she gets a little upset.  Well perfect timing cause tonight she got a little cranky.  She was trying to yell at me and tell me to leave her alone.  I obviously don't blame her, she's miserable.  But I was kinda glad she was getting worked up because it was helping her take deep breaths!  Hopefully she'll be game for breathing in the tube later tonight.

We knew that there would be rough days and bumps in the road, today was bumpy for sure.
