The Big Day

Update:
5:00 EST

Whew!!
So, about 10 minutes ago our amazing surgeon came into the waiting room to see us and they are DONE!!!!! He surprised me because I was deep into my book and Benny had gone back to the Children's House for a quick nap. I told him I was not expecting him so soon, and he said that it was a fairly routine procedure! I laughed because that's just how he is. Luckily Benny walked at that moment so he didn't miss anything. Anyway, the surgery went great. He said that her pelvic bone just fell into place perfectly, a great osteotomy! He said that he gave her a brand new belly button in the right place, and fixed her urethra. Her bladder is all closed, and yet still small, closed!! Now, it's a waiting game in the next few years to see how big that bladder will grow. It will be another hour before she's done, but all the surgical procedures are done. Deep Breathe!!!!!!!!!!!
Now, I am super nervous to see her. I have butterflies because I don't quite know what to expect. I know that she will have an epidural so she will feel nothing from waist down. Yet another reason why epidurals are the BOMB! Also, she will be on pain meds and very groggy he said. I will not feed her for a day or two, but I've been pumping. She will have plenty of nutrient I.V.s to keep her hydrated and happy. She'll be in the ICU overnight, then downstairs in a quieter infant ICU for a week. Then onto a private room. So that is the deal, we are over a giant hurdle. Now, it's a matter of getting through these next long 6 weeks.

1:30 Est

The Orthopedic Surgeon has finished his portion of the surgery. Now comes the Urologist Dr. Gerhart's turn.
They estimate it will be another 6-8 hours of surgery left. Crazy huh?

In the meantime this is what Laura and I are doing:

Benny is getting work done

Laura just started reading The Pillars of the Earth

Our view of the wet and raining Baltimore

The day has finally arrived and we are now in the hospital with Lily.
Laura went into the OR and was able to see her put under.
She is now in good hands and we will see her in about 10 hours after her surgery.

Wow, a lot of updates, I'm so glad! I've been thinking about you all day as well. What a blessing to have such skilled doctors who can tell you that what they just did was "routine" and all is well. Whew! Here's to the next 6-8 weeks flying by and Miss Lily making a speedy recovery! Thoughts, hugs and prayers are sent. Hang in there!

Ps..how's the book?? Sucked in yet? Wanna throw it across the room yet? ;)

I came across your blog through a friend and realized that Benny was in my stake growing up. Anyway, I live in DC so if you ever need anything, please don't hesitate to let me know. I'm happy to help while you're out here. Seriously, if you need to run errands, a car for the day, etc.

PHEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I seriously had tears welling up in my eyes reading the lastest update! I am SOOO happy she is done and out of surgery. I saw the pic that Benny put on facebook and she looks so good. So asleep and so good. Can you even believe that people can do the things that your surgeons did? Amazing. I am so relieved and, again, am on the edge of my seat waiting for the next update. I'll call you in a couple days to see how you are hanging in there! Our prayers are started and ended with you guys! xoxo
